Security & Conflict Resolution
Terrorism, cybersecurity, strategic competition, climate change, hostile states, armed conflicts—all our most pressing global security issues need leaders who can handle the complex threats and risks we face with the confidence, training, and skills to make a difference. Gain an understanding of the roots of international conflict dynamics shaping our world at the Elliott School, as well as the skills to develop and plan strategic solutions.
Humanitarian Assistance
Addressing basic human needs to empower those affected by conflict, climate change, health emergencies, and other disasters to live their lives with dignity requires an in-depth understanding of the many and complex dimensions of humanitarian assistance. The Elliott School’s world-renowned faculty challenge you to conduct rigorous, independent research on humanitarian action and engage the policy communities in Washington, D.C., and worldwide to ultimately build more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable global strategies for addressing humanitarian needs.
Science and Technology; Space Policy
Science, technology and innovation issues are critical to our quality of life, environmental health, international competitiveness, and national security—on our planet and beyond. Both the Elliott School’s Institute for International Science and Technology Policy (IISTP) and the Space Policy Institute are world leaders in international public policy research and education, providing you with a deeply sophisticated knowledge base and skillset for both understanding the impact of global innovation policies as well as how to put them into practice.
Regional Specializations / Area Studies
Perhaps there is no better way to understand the interconnectedness and interdependence of global affairs than specializing in a specific region. The Elliott School contains several interdisciplinary hubs—from the Institute for African Studies (IAfS) and Institute for Middle East Studies to the Institute for European, Russian and Eurasian Studies (IERES) and more—that underscore how nation’s cannot be understood in isolation from each other or from global trends. With interdisciplinary perspectives brought from experts both within the Elliott School and across GW at large, you will develop a greater understanding of a region’s history, politics, and key players, while also developing essential skills that will be required in the field.
